Alive after Five Young Worker Presentation

Here is the Alive After Five handout booklet from Dani-Rose’s presentation!

This week, we have a presentation from the BC Federation of Labour! The 1st Rangers will be joining us for this interactive and important session as well.

Young workers are at the front of the line when it comes to workplace vulnerability. One-third of reported workplace injuries are from young workers.

The Alive After Five Young Worker Awareness Program of the BC Federation of Labour is an innovative initiative that seeks to make the province a healthier and safer place to live and work for all of us.

The presentations are engaging and interactive for the participants. The program has more than 50 skilled and trained presenters who provide dynamic and insightful information on vital subjects such as:

  • Hazard recognition
  • Knowing your Rights and Responsibilities in the workplace
  • How to properly report injuries
  • What protections are provided by the WCB Regulations

This meeting is taking place on Zoom. Please check the Calendar post for the meeting link and info!

2022 Service Projects

At our meeting on January 12, we decided on three service projects we’re going to do as a unit this year:

  1. Collect personal care items and donate to a local agency that supports women or families (personal care products can include new, unused hotel or commercial sized toiletries in their original packaging: lotion, shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, razors, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sunscreen, make-up, hair products/appliances, and assorted beauty supplies)
  2. Collect used books and donate to a local agency that distributes books to people in need (books could include fiction or non-fiction, books for children or adults)
  3. Collect bottles and cans that have a deposit, return them, and donate the fund to the Canadian World Friendship Fund to support Guiding in other parts of the world. (Check out this website for information about all of the different types of containers that have deposits on them! Rinse before storing to avoid smelly, sticky situations)

Please start gathering up the items above, as we’ll bring all of our items for donation together when we reconvene as a group in a few weeks.

Meeting updates for the next few weeks

Given the current situation with COVID 19, we’re going to pivot our meetings for the next few weeks to be online. Thank you all for your patience, understanding, and collaboration as we look to get through this phase of the pandemic together, and in service of our communities.

Dec 8: Skating at Hillcrest Community Centre – NOTE EARLY MEETING TIME

For our last get-together of 2021, we’re heading to Hillcrest Community Centre (4575 Clancy Loranger Way) for a public skate!

We’ll meet just outside the community centre main door (west side of the building, next to the round-about, where you’d enter the pool and rink) at 5:45 pm, in order to get checked in for the 6 pm public skate time. Pick up from the same location at 7:30 pm. There is no cost to attend, but there are some important things to note – read on for more info!

What to know and bring:

  • Vaccine passports are mandatory for everyone 12 years and older, so please bring your vaccine passport with you! Youth 12 – 18 are not required to have government ID to go with the passport.
  • If you have your own skates and helmet, please bring them. If you don’t have skates, we’ll rent them for you.
  • Likewise, if you have Park Board monthly flexi-pass, please bring it with you. Otherwise, we’ll pay for your admission.
  • Wear warm and comfortable clothing, including gloves, scarf etc. as it’s cool in the rink!
  • Bring a water bottle, but leave valuables etc. at home.

Text Karla if you have any questions prior to meeting. Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you tomorrow night!
