IN PERSON: Mental and Physical Self-Defense Workshop with ARISE – at Trout Lake Park

May 12, 2021 @ 6:45 pm - 8:30 pm

We are doing an in-person mental and physical self-defense workshop at Trout Lake Park with ARISE.  Meet at 6:45 pm at the Trout Lake Concession Stand (in the south end of the park, near the parking lot – access from 19th & Lakewood).

For this meeting you will need to:

1) Complete the Digital Waiver: Please forward this link to parents https://app.cleverwaiver.com/render/templateByRefId/604428869ee3e500fe57407d. The waiver outlines the risks involved with learning self-defense and other important details.
2) Bring: Participants are to bring a blanket/yoga mat, wear comfortable clothing and have some water.
3) What to expect: The session will begin with a discussion time around the topics of safety, boundaries and consent and then transition into learning some jiu-jitsu based self-defense techniques.

Arise’s mission is to foster inner confidence, resiliency and awareness in young people, through fun, engaging and active workshops.

Arise Programs seeks to teach children and youth that they are worthy of being safe and respected

Their whole-being approach brings together a unique combination of physical literacy and social-emotional learning. Equipping participants with the physical, emotional and intellectual skills essential to the development of self-confidence, awareness and character.

Through self-defense, mindfulness, role-play games and artful discussion activities, this session will focus on the exploration of movement, body autonomy, self-confidence and social awareness.

Part 1) Mental Self-Defense: Discussion-based activity addressing 1 or 2 concepts of personal safety, for example, non-verbal communication, consent/boundaries or emotional regulation. During this time, we may talk and draw, making mental and emotional connections to important topics.

Part 2) Physical Self-Defense: We’ll learn simple self-defense techniques that they can try at home solo or with a parent or sibling. These techniques can be implemented straight away and don’t involve any fighting or aggression, but rather reinforces individuals’ body autonomy and their right to say no.
